Keaton had spent the day locked up in the Presidential Suite of Hotel Montefiore. At dinner, the concierge he’d met when he’d arrived, Samuel, arranged for a meal of poached salmon, a baked potato, green beans with truffle oil, a platter of fruit, crudités and a plate of cookies. Keaton stopped briefly to eat, picking at the food, leaving much of it on his plate in the middle of the suite, and taking a single chocolate chip cookie back to his computer, which he finished as he worked. He didn’t have much of an appetite.

The plans were coming along nicely to finish Raashid’s project, minus the fact that Keaton was missing one important part of the necessary data — the second implant. As he stared at his computer, he pounded his fist on the desk, trying to figure out how he was going to finish the coding without the information. Had Raashid killed the man to make his job impossible or was it something else – like a robbery gone bad? Maybe the guy was working on the side for someone else and Raashid found out. A shiver ran down Keaton’s spine. He wasn’t afraid of much, but based on what he’d seen, Raashid was worth a measure of fear.

“You haven’t made this easy for me have you?” Keaton muttered under his breath, putting his fingers to the keyboard again. Raashid had announced three months before that he’d separated the final detonation sequences into two of the implants. Keaton would have to have access to both of those people in order to complete his work. At the time, Raashid said it was a protection for both of them. Now, trying to finish the project, Keaton wasn’t so sure. Finishing the project was the only way to get Raashid to relinquish control of the shares of stock he held in his iron grip on the company, not to mention the threat against Keaton’s dad.

But then somehow, one of the people carrying the data he needed had died.

Keaton frowned. It had to be Raashid, but that didn’t change things. The bottom line was one of the men trusted with the implant — and specifically, one that carried the other half of the detonation sequence — was dead and when Keaton’s people had gone to retrieve the body, the implant had disappeared.

And even though he’d tried every trick he could find to activate the implant again, Keaton had been unable to access the data remotely.

Each of the implants had precise GPS technology that told Keaton exactly where the team was. But something must have happened when the man was killed. The implant had gone off-line and hadn’t come back on since.

Keaton leaned back at his desk, closing his eyes for a moment, interlacing his fingers behind the back of his head. His stomach had tightened into a tiny knot, enough so that it was threatening to throw up the salmon he’d eaten for dinner. The salmon had been delicious going down, but he wasn’t sure exactly how good it would taste coming up again if he couldn’t hold it together.
